Exercises in Psychometry are the staple tool of the circle leader, for assisting novice mediums in their development. The practice of heightening ones own psychic awareness and increasing spiritual sensitivity through the inanimate object, is both fascinating and rewarding. The science behind Psychometry is equally captivating, as it reveals that psychic impressions transcend the human mind.
In 1842, an American scientist J.Rhodes Buchanan coined the term Psychometry from the Greek words ’psyche’ (soul) and metron (measure) in other words ‘soul measuring.’ However, the difficulty with this translation would imply that inanimate objects have souls too.
The theory that all objects have a soul is the basis of the early pagan religion of ‘animism.’ However, today we may be more inclined to regard inanimate objects as of the material world and subject to constant physical change within the environment, rather than having a point of physical death whereupon the soul and body part. These opposing views may be further compounded by the phenomena of apports and asports, where objects materialise or de-materialise in the séance room. This could lead to a belief that even inanimate objects which have the capacity to ‘disappear’ and reappear in another place, also have the capacity to defy our current understanding of time and space. These are confusing theories when considering how Psychometry works.
For our purposes, Psychometry provides us with an interesting and enlightening approach to working with the energy of an inanimate object, those who come into contact with the object and those who impress their energy upon it.
We may understand that each incarnate being has an aura, within which resides that person’s history and emotions. We may also know that the energy in the aura can be ‘read’ by psychics and that it is also a means of transporting communication between the discarnate spirits and the medium. This therefore demonstrates how powerful the energy of the aura is. The possibility exists that the energy within the aura of incarnate beings, possess a means of communicating with inanimate objects too.
Just as the discarnate world can interpenetrate the incarnate world, there is no reason to believe that the incarnate world cannot interpenetrate with the inanimate. One theory suggests that every object is porous. The hardest rocks are changed over time by rain, wind, movement and temperature. The powerful energy of the aura may be considered to penetrate an object and leave its mark, ensuring that anyone who comes in contact with it too, will not only leave their energy upon it, but be able to sense the energy of all who have encountered that very same object. This would explain why many good psychics who work with Psychometry, prefer to work with an object that has not been handled by too many people, in case they ‘read’ to many conflicting energies.
Popular exercises in Psychometry include water and sand readings. Here a person places their hand in the water or sand and the psychic reader, gleans information from the energy which has been impressed upon the sand or water. Other exercises include flowers and ribbons, where everyone chooses one and the psychic randomly picks one out to be read. A good psychic, skilled in Psychometry can give a detailed reading of the energy impressed upon an object.
The theory of Psychometry is furthered by the knowledge that inanimate objects also radiate energy - as humans do through their auras. Geological testing shows us that certain rocks and crystals emit a form of radiation naturally and this forms the basis for those who work with crystals as tools for healing. Anyone who has had a house buying survey in the past few years will know that the geology of the land is measured for specific gases which can be harmful to health. Radon gas is the main concern here and is in found in high levels where there is much granite. Thus, we know scientifically that inanimate objects emit energy in some form. Is it therefore possible that Psychometry works by the blending of energies between the inanimate and the animate world?
This may be possible to a degree but as with all Psychic work, the will of the mind is fundamental to the strength of its work. The psychic will actually work mentally to psychometrise the inanimate object, whereas it would be hard to believe that the object is willing itself to be read in some way.
Buchannan’s work gives us an exciting opportunity to make our considerations as to how powerful Psychometry is. Some of his experiments included the Psychometry of fossils. People with no prior knowledge, where able to describe the landscapes, vegetation and habitats of the fossils which had started as creatures, millions of years ago. The results were confirmed by scientists.
Although there are differing theories as to the nature of Psychometry, it makes sense that inanimate objects have the capacity to absorb energy and store it, in the light of Buchanan’s experiments. These impressions can then be read by Psychometry. It would be hard to prove that an inanimate object has the capacity to know when to release that energy for the psychic to read and although every object omits some form of energy, it is the will of the human mind and the influences upon the aura which are key to understanding this fascinating aspect of psychic reading.
With communication work of a psychic nature, the key to its success is the will of the mind and the energy of the incarnate aura. I do believe that history and emotion are stored energy of the inanimate and that the capacity of the Psychic for Psychometry is dependent upon the ability to blend energies and accurately interpret them.
