Psychic or Medium?

We may be clear that all Mediums are psychic - but not all Psychics are mediumistic. However, a greater understanding is required as there is often confusion as to what is psychic and what is not.

Starting with the Psychic, the word originates from the Greek ‘Psyche’ and is understood to mean ‘of the soul.’ This is clearly confusing as the work of the Medium is to link with the essence or soul of a discarnate spirit to prove evidence of eternal life. And yet working psychically to give this proof is not considered evidential. This is because every object, person or place radiates information, which has been impressed upon them by either memories, atmospheric conditions and emotions. A Psychic is able to ‘tap’ into these impressions and with their heightened sensitivity, glean or read the subject and formulate information which can then be expressed. Psychics have an extra - sensory perception.

In the case of Psychometry for example, the Psychic can hold an object, sense the energy emanating from it and then divulge what information they have gleaned. This can be very effective in the case of personal objects such as jewellery or heirlooms. Over the history of the objects concerned, they become a storehouse of the conditions around them. A good Psychic may be able to give a detailed history of the object. Furthermore, they may also pick up a lot of information regarding the owner’s life and what is occurring around them at the time. To some degree, that information can shape an idea of what may be about to occur and an element of foretelling may be possible. However, the caveat that this is only a likely outcome is necessary, as the future can be altered by our own free will.

Many Psychics work with the individual and the psychic emanations from another person originates from within the Aura. This is the energy field we all have and only leaves us when our physical body dies. It holds all our memories and emotions and a good Psychic can tell a person a great detail about their lives - both past and present. This is particularly useful for people who feel that they need guidance in their lives, if their own capacity is not great enough to draw on their own Auric emanations. This is not to suggest that a Psychic should be considered in some way as an advisor as people need to make their own decisions. However, it does help people to find their own solutions when they become aware that their energy is a reflection on how they are at that moment.

Psychic emanations are capable of being transmitted over great distances. Furthermore, the telephone, internet, letters and photographs present no problems for Psychic Reading, if a person is sensitive enough to working in this way. There are many accounts of people sensing changes or events around others, when there is no physical contact. This phenomena is well documented amongst identical twins who are ‘psychically’ very close and may account for expectant father’s going into false labour (the emanations being so in tune with the real Mother that they experience physical symptoms)! This is evident when an expectant father is experiencing a false labour and has no idea that his baby is about to be born. This type of communication is often referred to as ’telepathy’ and it is not scientifically understood how it works. It may be that the mind can influence the brain to send out a communicating energy. What is clear is that many Psychics and Mediums report increased telepathic ability.

What is apparent with the Psychic is that their work does not involve linking with Discarnate Spirits - although this can occur without the Psychics intent and happens when Spirits use the Auric emanations of a place to make a link.

Psychic ability is something which can be developed, although in some Psychics there is strong inherited tendency.

All Mediums have a heightened Psychic ability. This is necessary as Discarnate Spirits work by linking their energy to the Medium via the Auric Field. Thus, the Medium is required to be highly attuned to Auric emanations, in order to understand the communicating spirit.

The development of the Mediums’ ability to link with Discarnate Spirits involves work which heightens their sensitivities. Psychic exercises are the usual way to do this along with meditations.

However, the developing Medium has to specialise in their work by getting to know their Guides and helpers form the Spirit World. They will work with the Medium establishing how to communicate between the two worlds and how to develop the Mediums faculties and Spiritual awareness of the nature of man and his Spiritual existence. This not something the Psychic has to do - it is more important for the Psychic to heighten their own sensitivity from within themselves and become more familiar with energies and Auric emanations.

In order for the Mediums’ work to be evidential of an afterlife, they must attain a sensitivity which links with the discarnate spirit and not with a living person or a physical object. This is why demonstrations of Mediumship should not include any opportunity for the Medium to get close to the Auras of their recipients, or touch objects belonging to them. It would be very easy for a Medium to accidentally be tuning into psychic information and confuse it with knowledge of a discarnate spirit. This would not prove that our lives are eternal.

The heightened sensitivity of the developing Medium can be strong enough to affect the Medium physically, mentally and emotionally and the developing Medium has to take great care to avoid excesses which could have a negative impact on their welfare. Tiredness, erratic moods and a tendency to want to help everyone, are danger signs for the Medium and development must ensure adequate provision is made to avoid such pitfalls.

Of great significance is that Mediums spend a lot of time developing their relationship with their guides and helpers. They are necessary to support the Medium in their development, spiritual growth and to facilitate the communications between the Mediums and the discarnate spirits.

The similarities between a Psychic and a Medium are several and the first similarity is that both are tuning into the ‘spirit.’ The Psychic and the Medium can tune into the ‘spirit’ of a living person, but the Medium must make a link with a discarnate spirit only, to prove life after physical death.

Both Mediums and Psychics follow similar developmental exercises, but the Medium takes this further and strengthens their links with the discarnate.

In both cases, Psychic and Mediumistic ability can be inherited.

The subconscious mind of both Medium and Psychic plays an essential role in development and practice.  As Discarnate Spirit works by influencing the Mediums subconscious, the Medium must ensure that their subconscious influences are suppressed to such a degree, that the Spirit Communication is as true and accurate as possible. However, the subconscious of the Psychic is not under the influence of external communicators and must remain uncompromised, but attuned to the influences of living or inanimate energy. Effectively, the Psychic’s own subconscious, with all its memories, prejudices and emotions is possibly an asset to their work.

These similarities and differences between Psychic and Mediums are important when we consider the end results of their work. Under no circumstances can a Mediums spirit communications be considered evidential if they have been gleaned from an object or an Aura. This does not diminish from the excellent Psychic work that is done, it merely, discerns the essential differences.
